Has this happened to you?
You’re ambling along in life and it hits you; you realise you’re unfit, overweight or so unhealthy you risk dying prematurely.
The realisation is like a smack between the eyes. You’ve been drifting along, believing that you eat well, sleep well and exercise enough but you catch a glimpse of your fattening self, or your Doctor reads you the riot act (which you were expecting) or you take the stairs or go to lift one of the kids and find you can’t.
Suddenly, you realise you’re losing it – and it’s time to do something.
It happens to most of us, sometimes more than once over the course of our lives. The beauty is you don’t need a lot to rebuild.
For many, starting is the biggest obstacle.
The excuses we commonly hear are cost (gym’s and trainers are so expensive), time ( I just don’t have the time in my day for an exercise regimen); and method (I don’t know what to do).
The truth is you only need one thing to start: motivation. And if you’ve read this far, you’ve got it.
Deciding to decide to start can be a powerful thing and once you start you’re halfway there. Once the results start coming in (after only a few days) you will inspire yourself to even greater results!
You’ll begin to understand the link between nutrition, exercise, rest and recovery and how this combination transforms your life.
Here’s how:
Exercise:

First of all, replace ‘I can’t’ with ‘how could I?’ This is so powerful.
What could you do?
Walk instead of taking the car.
Take the stairs.
Fill a couple of 2 litre milk or juice bottles with water to use as free weights – fill with sand as you get stronger.
Try NOT bending your knees when you pick up something off the floor. (STRETCH)
Tense your stomach muscles whilst brushing your teeth.
Once you start – keep going!
Rest:
Sleep is so underrated. It’s the one chance your body has to really rest and regenerate. If you’ve been racking up a sleep debt, you’ve also been depleting your Human Growth Hormone (HGH) production.
You need HGH for muscle growth and to keep looking and feeling young and fit.
Lack of sleep also increases your chances of having a heart attack or developing type-2 diabetes.
Ideally, you want to be getting 8 hours sleep per night and new studies show that the most valuable hours are between 10pm and midnight – any hour of sleep before midnight is worth two after midnight.
So, if you’re only going to get six hours sleep, you should feel much better by sleeping from 10pm to 4am as opposed to getting to bed at midnight and sleeping until 6am.
Try it!
Nutrition:
With so much conflicting information out there – who’s right? What to do?
A wise man once said ‘if you want to know the type of tree, look at the fruit’
This means to look at the results because that’s where the proof is.
Conventional wisdom (if you want to call it that) tells us to eat lots of grains but grains equal starch which in turn equals sugar. Sugar plays havoc with our insulin function and basically gears your metabolism to store these sugars as fat. That increases your risk of weight gain, obesity, diabetes and heart disease to name a few.
The resulting impaired insulin activity places extra demands on your adrenal glands, causing exhaustion and fatigue; your pancreas, creating insulin resistance and poor digestion; and your immune system – more colds and flu, hay fever, skin and respiratory conditions.
The saying ‘you are what you eat’ has never been truer and how you look, feel and age is predominantly up to what you put into your mouth.
Exercise and rest are important for your health but your nutrition is critical – don’t be digging your grave with your mouth!
